Were you one of those kids who mindlessly dipped their salty french fry into soft serve ice cream and discovered that the burst of opposing flavors was magical together?
When you think about it, we were introduced to the beautiful union of the salty-sweet marriage early on. Think back to those big breakfasts you'd wake up to with pancakes drizzled with sweet, sticky syrup. And on the side? Crispy, savory bacon!
If you love the best of both worlds, we’ve got a list of sweet and salty combinations that we know you’ll love as much as we do. Some of these are classic favorites while some are surprising combos you have to try!
1. Bacon Cinnamon Rolls
Those who love bacon crave it so much that they'll pair it with just about anything. Luckily, someone was brilliant enough to not just top something with bacon but to actually bake it in.
So what happens when you place bacon strips into soft, pillowy cinnamon roll dough? You get the decadent combination of tasty bacon with the sweetness of sugar, cinnamon, and butter.
2. Chocolate-dipped Pretzels
Did you know that hard pretzels were made by accident in the 1800s by an apprentice who fell asleep and overcooked a batch of pretzels? And while we love a good soft pretzel, it’s firm and crunchy counterpart is an all-time favorite snack.
Now elevate that classic by dipping it in silky chocolate. While we can’t tell you whether or not combining the sweet richness of chocolate with the salty crunch of the pretzel was an accident like the discovery of the hard pretzel, we can say that our feelings for them are completely intentional.
3. Brie with Honey
Mild-mannered brie is so soft, creamy, and savory and yet, it gets all the attention on party platters especially when you see that it’s drizzled with sweet honey.
It’s incredibly easy to make! And all you need is a wedge of brie and a few tablespoons of honey. You can either bake the brie until it’s good and gooey or warm the honey before you drizzle it on top. It’s delightful either way.
4. Chocolate Toffee Candy
Warning! This sweet, salty, crunchy and chocolaty confection is addictive. It’s a well-deserved indulgence, and you will find that one is never enough!
The folks at Buster’s Bark have perfected the balance of fine chocolate, toffee, fresh walnuts for that irresistibly pleasing salty-sweet crunch. Eat it straight out of the container or pair it with other desserts like ice cream or mousse.
5. Monte Cristo Sandwich
The Monte Cristo Sandwich is basically ham and cheese wedged between two slices of French toast with berry jam on the side. So not only is the bread fried in butter but some go as far as sprinkling powdered sugar on top. A lot is going on with this sandwich - from different textures to the battle in your mouth between salty and sweet, but it’s a clash of flavors that you’ll happily surrender to.
Did any of your favorite salty and sweet combinations make it to our list? If not, we’d love to hear about what yours are.
